Befriender service

Befriending is all about developing informal and supportive social relationships, often over an extended period of time. The relationship is voluntary on both sides. The befriender is there to provide some form of regular practical assistance and support to an adult carer, young carer or disabled person.

Who makes a good befriender?

Befrienders can be any age and may have a variety of life experiences and backgrounds - students, retired people, unemployed people or ex-offenders. The most important skill is to be able to listen. You can help the person you befriend to talk and think about the future and support them in coping with life challenges.

Befriending can be very rewarding for all partipants and is an excellent opportunity for people who feel they would like to 'give something back' to the community.

What support will I get?

Dundee Carers Centre provides full induction training, comprising three sessions. As a volunteer, you can access our internal training and development programme and social events. You will also have a designated staff member to support you.

How do I apply?

If you are interested, you can download an application form and volunteer information pack.
